When I interviewed Jacque Salentine Busby owner of Luxe Travel Deals about her recent trip to Africa I was not expecting to hear such an amazing and truly inspirational travel experience. She was candid about how this trip to Africa made a huge impact in her life and how it will forever change how she operates her luxury travel business in the future.
Touched by her experiences and intrigued by the story, I became so involved that I did not realize we had been talking on the phone for hours and I had already committed myself to the cause. Jacque fell in love with a country and a cause on that vacation and the positive energy that she received spread to this reporter. I decided to jump on board and do whatever I could to help in her efforts.
I suppose this is the true beauty of changing the world; it is addictive in a positive way.
While visiting the Singita Game Reserve along with eight other strangers, Jacque learned the true meaning of what she referred to as citizen diplomat. Citizen diplomat can be loosely defined as the commitment to change the world one person, one idea and one organization at a time. It is the selfless act of doing something positive that will ultimately change the world in some way and cause others to react in this same positive way. Simply changing the world one idea at a time will cause a domino effect to bring about real change.
Brian Harris, director of the Singita Grumeti fund and his team are a perfect example of true citizen diplomat. Thier ideals have created a world of change both for Africa and for the tourists who visit the resort. The Singita game reserve is dedicated to improving the African Eco-system by creating a minimal footprint on the natural land and by creating a safe haven for animals. They have convinced some of the once known poachers to become protectors of the very same animals they once hunted. Most recently they have begun a Rhino re-introduction program.
Rhinos once roamed freely on the reserve but were nearly obliterated by poaching. The reserve has slowly been reintroducing the rhino population back into this land in an effort to repopulate it. It is a long and painstaking process but the results have already proven to be worth the effort. As a direct result the Eco-system is now in a state of repair and the animal kingdom is rebuilding its hierarchical system. Huge change is going on in Africa, created by a small idea and implemented by a few caring individuals. This is the fundamental idea behind citizen diplomat.
