Unusual luxury travel break near Tokyo
The sometimes-sleepy little town of Chichibu is a short ninety-minute Red Arrow train trip from Tokyo, but worlds apart from big city life. Here dormitory homes and temples share a green landscape with streams and waterfalls, and sometimes the only sounds out in the nearby countryside are those of grazing sheep. Perhaps you are wondering what this has to do with luxury travel by now.
For over three centuries, things have changed suddenly on December 3 every year at Chichibu, as teams of local people in traditional dress appear, and draw thirty-five foot high decorated floats lit by lanterns through narrow streets. Two hours of spectacular fireworks follow. These are in honor of a two thousand year shrine, and were the inspiration for the comic opera The Mikado too. Many holidaymakers on luxury travel holidays prefer to stop over at a simple Chichibu hotel, so that they can take in a little more of the excitement of the night. The next morning they return to Tokyo, to continue with other excitement on their Japanese luxury travel holiday.
